WAEC withdraws 2025 results over mass failure

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the 2025 WASSCE results for review after a wave of complaints over mass failure in key subjects.

In a statement on Thursday, WAEC said an internal audit uncovered technical problems that affected scores in Mathematics, English, Biology and Economics.

The Council blamed the issue on a new anti-malpractice system introduced to improve exam integrity.

“WAEC regrets the technical challenges discovered after the release of the 2025 results,” the statement read.

It explained that the error came from a new method called paper serialisation, which shuffles questions in exam papers to discourage cheating. But the system reportedly caused result errors.

As a result, the Council has shut down the result-checking portal temporarily.

“Candidates are advised to recheck their results after 24 hours,” WAEC said, adding that efforts are underway to correct the problem.

“We apologise to all affected candidates and the general public,” the statement added. “WAEC is working round the clock to fix the issue and ensure fairness for everyone.”
