Bandit Attacks: Reps want FG to establish security base in Zamfara communities

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to urgently bolster security in Zamfara State, where communities continue to face relentless attacks by armed bandits.

This call followed a motion sponsored by Hassan Shinkafi, the lawmaker representing Shinkafi/Zurmi Federal Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Shinkafi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Shinkafi and Zurmi Local Government Areas. He highlighted the escalating violence, which has resulted in widespread killings, maiming, and kidnappings.

“The House is aware that the Governor of Zamfara State has taken pragmatic steps to secure the state, including the establishment of a Security Trust Fund, Community Protection Guards, intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and logistical support for security agencies,” Shinkafi stated.

Despite these efforts, he noted that insecurity persists, forcing residents to flee and leaving over 40 villages deserted. “The situation has inflicted untold hardship on the people, preventing access to farmlands, markets, and schools,” he added.

Shinkafi also lamented the withdrawal of military troops after just two weeks of deployment, which allowed bandits to regroup and resume attacks.

In response, the House unanimously called on the Federal Government to direct the military to establish permanent, well-equipped security bases in Magarya, Kurya, Kware, Dutsi, Mashema, Gurbin Bore, Boko, and Dole communities within Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs. They also urged security and law enforcement agencies to collaborate with the Zamfara State Government to curb the rising wave of insecurity.

Additionally, the House mandated the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to provide relief materials to victims affected by the violence in the constituency.
